Movium – Centre for the Urban Public Space at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Movium’s objective is to identify and communicate relevant knowledge about the meaning of the public space to people in our cities and towns. Through gathering, accumulating and systematising knowledge, articulating questions and making generalisations based on experience, Movium aims to increase understanding of the significance of the public space to social development in general and to human welfare and well-being.
Since 1980, Movium has been a coordinating, cross-disciplinary unit for communicating knowledge on issues related to planning, construction, management and use of outdoor public spaces. Movium communicates knowledge by means of information, advanced education, advisory services and projects.
Movium has published more than 170 books on a variety of themes pertaining to urban outdoor public spaces. Easily accessible professional information focused on topical issues is also conveyed in “Gröna Fakta,” a technical newsletter. The Movium Bulletin newsletter is aimed at politicians and journalists as well as those who work professionally with outdoor public spaces.
Every year, Movium arranges 15-20 courses, conferences, seminars and other events, with about 1,000 participants. The courses are designed for active professionals and are oriented towards planning, construction and management of outdoor public spaces. Movium also provides customised sponsored education and is active in the development of independent subject credit courses at the college level.
Members of the Movium Advisory Council (Movium Rådgivning) have access to about 30 experts in fields related to urban public spaces. The Council’s website contains questions and answers from the Advisory Service, Movium’s information sheet in PDF and other useful knowledge. Movium also publishes the Movium Direkt newsletter, exclusively for the members of the Advisory Service.
Movium initiates and runs projects. The communication of knowledge gives Movium a central position in matters pertaining to the public space.
As of 2006, Movium has also assumed national coordinating responsibility communicating knowledge on issues that relate to the outdoor environments of children and youth.
Movium is the primary meeting place for practitioners and researchers dedicated to working with outdoor public spaces. |
